DAILY GK UPDATE - 5th May

1.    Ahmed Maiteeg elected New PM of Libya
i. Businessman Ahmed Maiteeg was elected on Sunday as Libya�s new prime minister after receiving 121 votes in parliament.
ii. He was then sworn in and given two weeks to form a cabinet.
iii. His election came in the second session of the day after an earlier session failed to secure him the 120 votes needed among the 200 members for victory.
iv. Maiteeg, 42, is a businessman born in the coastal city of Misurata who studied economics in London. He is supported by the Islamist bloc in parliament, according to the broadcaster Al Arabiya.

2.    Juan Carlos Varela to be new President of  Panama
i. The opposition leader Juan Carlos Varela has won the Presidential election in Panama with almost 40 percent of the votes.
ii. Mr Varela, who is currently the country's Vice President, had distanced himself from President Ricardo Martinelli.
iii. The President's preferred candidate, the governing party contender Jose Domingo Arias, came second.

3.    Rahul Kulshreshth appointed new Indian envoy to Turkey
i. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday appointed Rahul Kulshreshth as the next Ambassador to Turkey.
ii. Kulshreshth, a member of the 1985 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), is currently serving as the Joint Secretary at Headquarters.

4.    Slovenia PM formally resigns post 
i. Slovenia�s Prime Minister has formally resigned, calling for an early vote to be held in the small EU nation next month.
ii. Alenka Bratusek handed in her resignation to the parliament speaker on Monday after announcing earlier she was stepping down.

5.    Rangarajan says CAD to be around 2% of GDP
i. India�s Current Account Deficit (CAD) is likely to be around 2 per cent of GDP in the coming few years due to slackening of gold imports, among other factors, Prime Minister�s Economic Advisory Council Chairman C Rangarajan said on Monday.
ii. Finance Minister P Chidambaram recently said the CAD was brought down significantly to $ 32 billion in 2013-14 as against $ 88 billion during 2012-13 and fiscal deficit contained within the target in the last fiscal.
iii. The CAD in 2012-13 was 4.7 per cent of GDP and in 2013-14 it will be only 1.7 per cent, the Finance Minister had said.
iv. Replying to a query, he said administrative restrictions that were imposed on gold import may be relaxed as the prices of the yellow metal are stabilised.

6.    ING Vysya Life Insurance Company Ltd has become Exide Life Insurance Company
i. ING Vysya Insurance changes name to Exide Life Insurance Company.
ii. An announcement to this effect was made by Managing Director Kshitij Jain in Bangalore on Monday.
iii. The change is with immediate effect following approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority and Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
iv. It is a decision in tune with Exide acquiring 100 per cent ownership of the insurance company.
v. The insurance company will continue to honour its commitments and obligations under the insurance policies issued to customers in the name of ING Vysya Insurance Company Ltd.

7.     Ex-tennis player Elena Baltacha dies of cancer
i. Elena Baltacha, a former top-50 professional tennis player, who had been fighting liver cancer since retiring from the game, died on Sunday. She was 30.
ii. The former British No. 1 died peacefully surrounded by family and friends, the Women�s Tennis Association said on its website.
iii. Baltacha, who represented Britain at the 2012 London Olympics, was diagnosed with the illness in January, two months after retiring from tennis and only weeks after she married her long-time coach Nino Severino.

8.    Ahmet Sik won UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2014
i. Turkish investigative journalist Ahmet Sik won 2014 UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
ii. He received the award worth of 25000 US dollars by the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova in Paris.
iii. Ahmet Sik, 46, is a freelance journalist who worked for several Turkish newspapers such as Cumhuriyet, Radikal, Evrensel and Yeni Yuzyil between 1991 and 2011.
